NEWTON TOWNSHIP -- With both offenses off the mark, defense decided the season opener between River View and Maysville.
ZANESVILLE -- Despite a slow start out of the blocks, Zanesville found its gear down the stretch Saturday.
NEWTON TOWNSHIP -- The Maysville girls will rely on new leadership after losing four seniors from last year's second-place Muskingum Valley League team that finished 14-2 and 18-4 overall.
At Maysville, Karen Sidwell knocked in 12 of her 20 in the first quarter as the Panthers rebounded with a victory.
ZANESVILLE — Karen Sidwell and Haley Vallee triggered a 28-point first quarter, as Maysville jumped ahead and didn’t look back in a 71-50 winover visiting Morgan Saturday night in the Muskingum Valley League.
CROOKSVILLE -- Maysville kept pace in the Muskingum Valley League Wednesday night, with another big performance from Melanie Poorman.
At Byesville, the Colts (4-2) broke open a close contest with an 18-5 third quarter and got past the Panthers (5-2).
At New Lex, Martha Kunkler found Andrea Abram, who scored the game-winner as the buzzer sounded, and New Lex improved to 4-1 in the Muskingum Valley League and 6-2 overall.
At Newton Township, the Tornadoes outscored the hosts 13-2 in the second quarter, as they built a 21-10 halftime lead and never trailed the rest of the way.
NEW CONCORD -- Melanie Poorman scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the third quarter and Karen Sidwell chipped in 15 counters, as visiting Maysville got back on the winning track Wednesday night with a 62-39 Muskingum Valley League win over John Glenn.
NEWTON TOWNSHIP -- If Smokey Robinson was cruisin' on a Sunday afternoon, the Tri-Valley Lady Dawgs were cruisin' on a Saturday night. They are also cruisin' through the Muskingum Valley League.
NEWTON TOWNSHIP -- After an electric first half for Philo's girls, the lights flickered out in the second half as Maysville overcame a first-half deficit for the second time this season, beating Philo 58-43 Wednesday night at the Panther Pound.
Sam Robinson and Kristy Swinehart continued to deliver for Sheridan's girls in a very big way.
McCONNELSVILLE -- Melanie Poorman poured in 28 points, including a go-ahead 3 with 4:41 left in the game, as Maysville outlasted host Morgan on Saturday.

DRESDEN -- The Tri-Valley girls basketball team has been state-ranked throughout much of the season.
ZANESVILLE -- With the tournament around the corner, one team appeared ready to make a run Monday. The other was run out of the building.
NEWTON TOWNSHIP -- Maysville coach Pat Miller wanted a challenge to get his team ready for the tournament.

COSHOCTON -- Danielle Ledrich had a monster night as New Philadelphia held off Maysville 43-40 in the Division II sectional girls basketball tournament at Coshocton High School.
Maysville's Poorman named to Division II First Team, along with Karen Sidwell who was selected Special Mention.
NESVILLE -- With another 16-0 mark atop the Muskingum Valley League, Tri-Valley coach Marty Bice was named coach of the year for a third consecutive season when all-league honors recently were released.
